It was created especially to be worn with tweeds and sports clothing. I had a very small sample of this fragrance many years ago and wrote down what notes I thought I could detect. It was similar to Lentheric's original Tweed fragrance.

When applied in the skin, I found that it had a muted citrus top, which I supposed had degraded over the years but was probably a lot brighter when new, similar to a classic cologne. The geranium, rose and lavender blend was very pronounced in my case. A bittersweet note from mixed herbs and a trace of pungency from carnation, was layered over forest-like mosses, dry grasses such as vetiver and precious woods. The deeply, warm animalic notes from civet, ambergris and leather made it ideal for men's use as well. But, a touch of sweetness from jasmine, orange blossom, and balsamic notes of benzoin and vanilla helped temper it from becoming too masculine.

Top notes: aldehyde, bergamot, neroli, geranium, lemon, herbs

Middle notes: honey, rose, jasmine, carnation, orris, lavender, orange blossom

Base notes: cedar, sandalwood, ambergris, musk, oakmoss, labdanum, tonka bean, civet, styrax, leather, vetiver, vanilla, benzoin, patchouli

Bottles:

Chanel No. 55 was housed in the standard Chanel crystal flacon used for other fragrances. No. 55 may also be had in lipstick, face powder, rouge, toilet water or cream, but I have never seen them in this scent.

"All Paris has a passion for the lucky numbers, whether it's 21 on the Roulette wheel, or No. 5 Rue de la Paix, a smart cafe, or No. 55, the latest couturiere [sic] perfume. To open the classic Chanel crystal parfum flacon, use the following tip provided by Parfums Chanel in 1963:

Remove cord and paper; with index finger as cushion, tap underneath sides of stopper lightly with glass object (glass on glass being the scientific method) while turning the bottle steadily between fingers, so that the stopper will be loosened evenly.

Fate of the Fragrance:
Chanel No. 22 was reformulated in 1985. Amber, spice notes and more natural floral notes were blended to the original No. 22 white floral bouquet reports indicate, making it "modern, provocative and lasting."

The EDT and EDP were also reformulated in 1989. Then discontinued around 1998. The EDT and EDP were reformulated with modern ingredients and re-launched in 1999 as part of the Les Exclusifs de Chanel collection.

Today I came across a fake perfume called "Chanel Chance Black" - this is NOT an authentic fragrance by Chanel. The bottle has two designs which mimic the original Chance bottle, however, it is black in color and has gold trim. One bottle has a compass design and "Chanel Chance" in gold script and is fitted with a golden cap. The other bottle simply says "Chanel Chance" and has a black cap. The boxes are shown below:

DO NOT PURCHASE - THESE ARE NOT GENUINE CHANEL FRAGRANCES - CHANEL DOES NOT PRODUCE "CHANCE BLACK" OR PUT "CHANEL CHANCE" INTO A BLACK BOTTLE.

GHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08581508408018361307noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2433075787487265795.post-65619358723114353622020-02-03T04:28:00.004-05:002023-01-19T10:20:32.449-05:00Prices of Chanel No. 5 in the 1940s

Shops like Chanel, Schiaparelli and Guerlain had signs on their doors saying "No perfume today!"

Heads Up! Here is a vintage Chanel No.5 fake perfume on ebay. This is what I term the "classic fake" style perfume that was made during the 1950s-1970s. It is the usual wrong and fake bottle with the sloping shoulders and the flat stopper. The label and boxes have the wrong font and sloppy printing.
This seller claims that it is "genuine" and says that "there is a lot of misinformation on the web."...

...well I hate to break it to them but this is a classic fake Chanel perfume. The bottle is marked "HP" "Bottle Made in France." It should be marked "Chanel" "Made in France" in the glass. The bottle is also the wrong shape - as you can see it has sloping shoulders, when it should be straight across. The stopper does not have all the faceting that the original bottles have.

The label is fake, and does not use the genuine Chanel font. The box is cheap and not the same thick cardstock that Chanel used.

Vintage 1920s perfume bottle with a beautiful frosted glass stopper molded with an image of moths. The bottle appears to be a copy of a Rene Lalique bottle used for Coty perfumes in the 1920s-1930s. I can tell that it is not an actual Lalique made piece as the stopper is not as finely molded as a genuine example and the sides of the stopper lack the extra details found on the originals. This may have been a bottle made by Coty's own glassworks for one of their perfumes.

The bottle has a fake Chanel paper label affixed to the front. Please note that Chanel NEVER used these type of bottles or the style of paper label shown.
Here is a heads up on a vintage fake Chanel perfume spray being sold on ebay, apparently it seems the seller does not know it is a fake. Chanel NEVER sold perfume in this bottle. The bottle is horizontally ribbed and features a black plastic cap with gold lettering and a leaf border along the bottom.

Chanel No. 19 by Chanel: launched in 1970. Created by Henri Robert. In USA in 1972. Chairman of the board of Chanel, Inc, at the time, H. Gregory Thomas (who also served as president of the company for 32 years), said that his good friend, Mademoiselle Chanel wanted a perfume all her own. It had to be something very different from Chanel No. 5, and she commissioned her top perfumers to work on the new concoction.

A confidante of Chanel's is said to have told her: "Why not bottle that indomitable, creative, magnificent spirit of yours? Make it your own personal signature. There must be a fragrance that captures the very essence of Coco Chanel. There are many, many ways I would describe what is uniquely you. But I shall choose perhaps 19 of the most obvious. This perfume must do justice to each. You will always be young no matter what age you reach. And truly elegant in your manner and lifestyle. Intensely female. Graceful. Casually understated. Contemporary. Brilliant. Witty. Fascinating. Generous. Honest. Courageous. Outspoken. Supremely confident and completely independent as few women are or ever hope to be. You are logical. A perfectionist. Unforgettable. And way ahead fo your time and the rest of us as well."

According to the story, Chanel was both delighted and amused by it. And having been born on Aug 19, she found the temptation to name the new fragrance No. 19 too great to resist. This was Coco Chanel's private perfume which she used for the three years preceding her death. Her own private stock, she occasionally gave some to special friends or select couture customers of the 31 rue Cambon salon. But mainly, she kept it to herself, "So that," said Chanel, "when I leave the room a touch of me remains."

Thomas promised her that the fragrance would not be marketed until her death. "She felt that she didn't want it sold as long as she was alive," said Thomas. The unnamed perfume's formula was found among her personal papers. The perfume came to be named Chanel No. 19, after Coco Chanel's birthday, August 19. "She was born on Aug 19," said Thomas, "I know the real year of her birth, but I'm not telling." (It was revealed it was officially in 1883).

"There's no such thing as a fashion in fragrance," said Thomas. "You can't do better than have a great classic. We think we do in No. 19. It's in the middle of the scale, halfway between dry an sweet and it has a sensuous appeal. People are returning to the enjoyment of their senses" look at the interest in food and wine."

The new fragrance was packaged in the classic, simple bottle and boxed in sleek black and white emblazoned with the double C's. Prices for the fragrance ranged from $7 to $100 and was matched with eau de toilette and bath powder. The Chanel way is to use everything in one fragrance from soap to bath oil to perfume.

At the 31 rue Cambon salon, the first floor of the salon was filled with the new perfume. The infamous Chanel No. 5 had to be taken out of drawers.

"We've been testing it for almost two years in Europe. You know, European women are so sophisticated about perfume," said Mademoiselle Josette Legoux, representative for Chanel. She explained that Chanel No. 19, was "more contemporary, heavier, and sweeter than No.5." She further added that, "Women want a stronger perfume today because of the pollution, you know. A woman should choose a fragrance for herself. She should buy what she likes. Well, considering maybe a husband or a boyfriend. When someone asks what you are wearing, it's much easier to remember a number."

Thomas said "It's a classic perfume, equal in quality to Chanel No. 5. It is still in a trial period, however, and must prove its worth. Chanel No. 5 now sells for $32 an ounce, just slightly less than gold, which sells for $38 an ounce. Chanel No. 19 projects a pink image. Pink is a feminine color. This perfume puts you in the pink with the warmth of a floral explosion. It employs iris-violet as its top note aroma - the first thing you smell in a perfume. This is compared to Chanel No. 5's dry martini top note and black and white image. - encompassing all color. Chanel No. 5 is halfway between sweet and sour on the fragrance scale."

Yvette Marie, a consultant with Chanel's fragrance education department said that "We realize that not all women wear Chanel No. 5, that's why we are introducing Chanel No. 19. Women are entitled to a choice if they like classic quality in perfumes Also, any woman who's ever tried Chanel No. 5 will use it again."

It was introduced in the USA in September of 1972.

H. Gregory Thomas held an all-pink luncheon at Perino's (101 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles), for the press to introduce the fragrance to the United States. To further expound the pink theme, he poured pink champagne (Piper-Heidsick, 1966 vintage) into slender glasses for the members of the press who were lucky invitees to the luncheon. The dining tables featured centerpieces if pink roses on pink linen tablecloths. For the luncheon, tender crab legs were flown in from Eureka, California, and were served alongside lemony veal piccata and crispy fried eggplant, a hot pink souffle culminated the end of the luxurious meal. To clean the hands of the diners, finger bowls with floating pink rose petals were set at the tables. The affair was overseen by the fastidious maitre d'hotel, Bruno Petoletti who conducted the event with precision. Thomas was accompanied by Yvette Marie, from Chanel's fragrance education department.

After the guests finished their delectable meals, Thomas began to talk about the perfume. He mentioned that the "green perfume projects a pink image. Pink is a feminine color. Green connotes youth. Youth is pink. This green perfume puts you in the pink..a pink and passionate perfume from Paris.. with the warmth of a floral explosion as if you buried your face in a bouquet of flowers. It employs iris-violet as its top aroma - the first thing you smell in a perfume, then ylang ylang blossoms of Nossibe from the Indian Ocean, jasmine, May roses, oak moss from Yugoslavia, Virginia cedar, anemone, sandalwood, plus musk, civet, and ambergris fixatives"."

"Originally created as Gabrielle Chanel’s signature fragrance, and named for her August 19 birthdate, N°19 expresses a rich, assertive blend of green and white flowers. The audacious, unconventional scent is reimagined in N°19 POUDRÉ, introducing facets of crisp green woods and precious iris for a truly timeless effect. True to the original, this unique fragrance remains resolutely modern, boldly sophisticated but ultimately sensual and feminine. So what does it smell like? It is classified as a green floral fragrance for women. It begins with a green top, followed by an elegant floral heart of fresh iris, jasmine, rose de mai, and ylang ylang, resting on a powdery, woody and mossy base. Chanel No. 19 is particularly interesting with its use of orris absolute as well as methyl ionones and methyl dihydrojasmonate (MDJ). The Coroliane base by de Laire was used by Chanel for the lily of the valley note in Chanel No.19. Coroliane was created by perfumer Henri Robert, who mixed the aromachemicals Hydroxycitronellal, Lyral with rose.
Chanel No. 19 was housed in the standard Chanel flacons over the years. The fragrance was first available in Parfum (Extrait), Eau de Cologne, and Eau de Toilette.

The Extrait was available in three sizes: 0.25 oz, 0.5 oz and 1 oz in the classic crystal flacon. A 0.25 ozspray perfume was also added.

By 1973, the Eau de Toilette splash bottles were available in four sizes: 2 oz, 4 oz, 8 oz and 16 oz. the Eau de Toilette Spray Mist was available as 1.5 oz and 3 oz.

By 1986, the Eau de Parfum was introduced.

To open the classic Chanel crystal parfum flacon, use the following tip provided by Parfums Chanel in 1963:

"Remove cord and paper; with index finger as cushion, tap underneath sides of stopper lightly with glass object (glass on glass being the scientific method) while turning the bottle steadily between fingers, so that the stopper will be loosened evenly."

In this guide I will introduce you to the world of perfume display bottles, also called Factices (pronounced fack-teece), and dummy bottles in the perfume trade.

A factice is an advertising store display bottle that is lent to a perfume vendor (department stores) by the perfume house and are not meant for retail sale. The bottles are exact replicas of the normal perfume bottles. Large factices, also known as show bottles, are the dummy bottles with colored alcohol ten times the size of real ones, were displayed to implant a visual identification in the mind of the shopper. These bottles were often displayed in windows and on the counters themselves.

Because these bottles are on loan, they are usually returned back to the perfume house and not sold publicly.

Dummy perfume and cologne bottles look just as attractive on display as the real thing and decrease shoplifter thefts.

In the early days of factices, these might be filled with perfume, but as time went on, manufacturers began to use colored water, a type of colored antifreeze, a mixture of rubbing alcohol or formaldehyde, or glycogen is used in most examples. The colored water examples sometimes have some sort of sediment or flaky particles floating around in the liquid, this is most likely caused by bacteria or mold growing in the water. Some factices, such as those for My Sin by Lanvin, are hollow, opaque plastic bottles, with no liquid inside.

The colored liquid for the factices often come pre-made in advance in aluminum containers when they are delivered to the department stores. Alternatively they might come as an extract in a small plastic bottle and the shop owner would have to mix it with distilled water.

I would like to mention that factices came in many sizes, from smaller versions of their retail examples to identical sizes, all the way up to much larger than life examples. These larger bottles are known as giant factices.

The older factices were made of glass or crystal, the newer ones of plastic or acrylic. The bases may be acid stamped or etched with "dummy", "factice" or a "D" engraved into the glass.

I have three possibilities on how the factices were marked. They were probably scratched "dummy" by the glass factories before they were sent to the perfume factories, or were scratched on at the perfume factories so that it wouldn't be mistakenly filled with the actual perfume. Another possibility is that it could have been scratched on by a store employee to differentiate it from the perfume filled examples.

I wanted to mention that some vintage Guerlain & Balenciaga bottles are often marked dummy on the back of the label that is on the front of the bottle. The only way to see the word dummy is by looking through the back of the bottle and seeing the back of the label on the front of the bottle. Since the labels were affixed at the perfume factories (which were in France but the bottles were for American export) it would make sense that the word "dummy" was used instead of factice (French for artificial, fake). Please note that recent examples might have a sticker or label on the back of the bottle that states "dummy" or "for display purposes only" or "not for resale".

Some Chanel bottles will have a small clear sticker on the back towards the bottom, with the words "Ne pas utiliser" (Do not use), and "Ne peut être vendu" (not for sale), "Factice" (dummy).

Some factices are one solid piece, meaning the stopper is molded into the base and not removeable. I have seen some acrylic factices like this for Givenchy perfumes.

Don't confuse a tester with a factice. Testers are advertising bottles filled with actual perfume and were meant to be used. Some stores will sell testers, and there are companies who will wholesale testers to the public. Testers generally come without a cap or box.

Please make sure you mention factice in your title and description. Collectors of factices will be able to find it easily. And people who are looking for the actual perfume bottle (not a factice) will appreciate your honesty.

The larger factices are generally much more desired than their smaller counterparts. The best factices are those marked Lalique or Baccarat, these signed pieces command the highest prices. You can find many different factices on ebay quite easily. Why not add one to your collection today?

How to determine if your bottle is a factice:

Is your bottle sealed with contents? Does it look like perfume? How can you tell if you have a factice? Some simple ways of determining this are listed below:

Shake the bottle. Do you see floating particles? if so, it is a factice. The particles are bacteria forming inside the colored water.

Shake the bottle. Do you see a separation of the contents? Do you see little balls of oily substance in a sea of what looks like alcohol? Then you have perfume in your bottle. The perfume oils often thicken due to age and evaporation. The fragrance congeals a bit leaving small oil balls in the alcohol.

Does the bottle have a waxed paper seal? if so, it may not be a factice. Vintage perfume bottles are usually sealed with onion paper which has been waxed over to prevent spillage during shipment. Also the stopper will be tied with a cord which wraps around the neck of the bottle. Some factices, such as the Chanel often times have this too, but I have never seen a factice with the waxed paper seal.

Can you smell perfume around the mouth of the bottle? If so it is not a factice. Your factice should have no perfume smell at all.

Are the contents dark and discolored? If so, it is most likely not a factice.Vintage perfume usually discolors and turns a darker shade over the years when exposed to air or heat. The liquid in factices should not discolor with age.

Look at the stopper and the neck of the bottle. Do you see any discoloration? If so, this will not be a factice. Vintage perfumes, due to the oils and evaporation, often discolor the inside neck of the bottle and stopper and leaves residue even if its still sealed. Factices should be clear and clean with no residue present.

Some buyers prefer their factices emptied before shipping, this keeps the shipping costs down as filled factices can be quite heavy and expensive to ship. If you want your bottle emptied before shipping, please make mention of this to your seller.

If your factice is empty, you may wish to refill them with a colored solution to look like perfume. It should not be plain water, as the bacteria in the water can cause mold and you will see floating flakes of gunk, which is not pretty. Also due to the bacteria, it may eventually cause clouding to the glass, which cannot be reversed and really looks horrible and ruins the value of your bottle. Instead, you can use this mixture to fill them.

Mix the following:

3/4 parts rubbing alcohol

1/4 part distilled water

To make the colored dye to mimic perfume, mix the following:

A few drops of food coloring

Small amount of warm water

Then add the the color mixture to the alcohol mixture. If you omit this step and simply add the food coloring directly into the alcohol mixture, it will not mix right and you'll only end up with colored bubbles.

Now, take a medicine dropper, plastic pipette or use a funnel to decant the alcohol mixture into your bottle. Be careful not to get any labels wet, as this can causing staining or rippling and will hurt the value of your bottle. Do not fill the bottle all the way to the top, leave some "headspace" for the glass to expand.

You can store any leftover mixture and save it for use the next time.

For the launch of the perfume, a luncheon was held at the Grand Vefour restaurant in Paris, where five sumptuous buffets and bottles and bottles of champagne delighted attendees. Sleek limousines chauffeured all guests. Later at 8pm, 800 guests were brought to the balconies of the Paris Opera House for a coveted lavish four course sit down gourmet dinner and collection showing to be held at 9:30pm. Guests were entertained by wandering jugglers, magicians, an eight piece chamber ensemble played Vivaldi, along with a tightrope walker who teetered across the grand staircase. Plenty of champagne to go around to helped to ease the boredom of the guests who waited patiently, and some impatiently for the rest of the long evening to continue.

In 1986, Chanel decided to launch the Coco fragrance in Canada, spending $5 million dollars to bring the fragrance to major Canadian department stores, one year after its introduction in the United States. Chanel invited about 30 Canadian fashion writers, as well as a writer each from Vancouver Magazine and Calgary Magazine, to a special VIP dinner in Paris. Chanel paid for each guest's to and from Paris. Chanel showered its guests with nearly $20,000 worth of swag. Limousines whisked the guests from the airport to the hotel where each guest found that a fabulous gift basket was sent to their hotel room. Stuffed into the basket were freesia, daisy and camellia pins, soap, cologne and bath gel in both Chanel's Cristalle and the new Coco fragrance. Guests were then given another limousine ride, this time to the Jules Verne restaurant atop the Eiffel Tower.

As the Canadian guests settled themselves into the leather banquettes, they were greeted with a little black box with the name Chanel emblazoned on it; inside the lucky guests found a brooch set with faux diamonds and faux pearls. The journalists nibbled on a sumptuous dinner consisting of bass in a delicate sauce topped with chanterelle mushrooms, spring lamb wrapped in puff pastry, savory cheeses and a melon sorbet with fresh strawberries in a grapefruit-sized shell of baked crepe, followed by champagne and other wines, coffee and cigars for the gentlemen. The main event took place at the end of the fall-winter ready-to-wear fashion shows that brought the Canadian fashion press, along with 3,000 other media and buyers from around to the world, to Paris. The day started with an 11 am cocktails and canapes press conference above Chanel's Rue Cambon shop in the luxurious apartment Chanel used for business and entertainment until her death in 1971. Waiter from LeNotre, in their freshly pressed white jackets, circulated the crowd with trays loaded with champagne and scotch.

The VIP dinner, gifts and overall treatment culminated to Chanel's biggest perfume launch since it introduced Chanel No. 19 in 1974.

The Coco fragrance is a rich blend of amber, spice and woody scents. One ounce of the parfum retailed for $220.

Fragrance Composition:

So what does it smell like? It is classified as a spicy semi-oriental fragrance for women with a strong hint of amber. Coco made use of several key ingredients to give it a unique formula including: hedione, lyral, Iso Super E, methyl ionone, eugenol, coumarin, salicylates, vanillin.

Top notes are coriander, mandarin orange, peach, Indian jasmine and Bulgarian rose

Middle notes are ylang ylang, carnation, frangipani, mimosa, clove bud from the Spice Islands, orange blossom, clover and rose

Base notes are patchouli, labdanum, amber, sandalwood, tonka bean, opoponax, civet and vanilla

Fragrance and Wellbeing: Plant Aromatics and Their Influence on the Psyche, 2013:

"Clove was also present in the "Mellis accord", which was a widely used base in spicy oriental fragrances including Youth Dew, Opium and Coco. The mellis accord, which makes up an important part of the fragrance here incorporates amyl salicylate in addition to benzyl salicylate, with the patchouli and hydroxycitronellal (which has a linden blossom-like, sweet, green, radiant odor), spices, woods and coumarin. Since then restrictions have been placed on some of these, so it will have been modified."

Bottles:

Coco was housed in the standard Chanel flacons over the years. The fragrance was first available in Parfum (Extrait) and Eau de Toilette. By 1986, the Eau de Parfum was introduced.

To open the classic Chanel crystal parfum flacon, use the following tip provided by Parfums Chanel in 1963:

Remove cord and paper; with index finger as cushion, tap underneath sides of stopper lightly with glass object (glass on glass being the scientific method) while turning the bottle steadily between fingers, so that the stopper will be loosened evenly.

Voile Parfume was launched in 1995, a light, water based, alcohol free, body spray that could be worn in conjunction with Coco or alone. "Coco Voile Parfume by Chanel, a body spray with a mix of flowers, chords of amber, and woodsy notes. This water-based, alcohol-free scent is similar to the original Coco but with a slightly fresher and more lightweight feel." Unfortunately this was discontinued by 1999.

Ancillary Products:.

Starting in 1987, ancillary items were offered under the name Les Plaisirs de Coco.

Over the years several bath & body items were produced, some of these were discontinued throughout the years and others were reformulated into new and improved bath and body products.

The feminine fragrance's beautiful name derives from one of Coco Chanel's dearest friends, Misia Sert. Sert was a talented pianist, artist, saloon owner as well as the favorite enigmatic muse of many famous artists such as Renoir. But it was Misia Sert who first planted the inventive seed of perfume genius inside of Coco's curious head.

Sert received a manuscript from a friend entitled, The Secret of the Medicis" that was found during renovations in a chateau in the Loire region, which allegedly contained the formula for an anti-aging potion created by Rene the Florentine, Queen Catherine de Medici's perfume chemist and master poisoner. Both Catherine de Medici and her beautiful rival in the affections of her royal husband, Henri II, Diane de Poitiers applied this unusual cologne to their faces to escape the ravages of time. Sert had an idea, she promised to give the owner of the ancient manuscript 6,000 francs if she could have the recipe.

She then went immediately to Coco Chanel and told her of the formula, in which she encouraged Chanel to launch her own form of the beauty tonic to be christened l'Eau Chanel. Sert thought that the cologne would be a smashing hit given Chanel's popularity around the world, and bringing in much more than the 6,000 francs she had promised the manuscript owner. The two women carefully conspired over the packaging and details of the fragrance and thus the beginnings of what would become Chanel No. 5. are, as they say...history.

As a scented tribute to the clever Misia, the house of Chanel is launching the fragrance with her name, alongside her friend, Chanel.

So what does Misia smell like? It is classified as a powdery floral chypre fragrance for women.
